County Sound Report 12th August  2008 - Bere Island  

  • The Festival committee would like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported the Bere island Festival 2008 which was a great success. Well done and thank you to all competitors in all events. Thanks also to everyone who supported the pub quiz on August 6th to raise funds for the festival  and the draw in aid of the Life-boat which was held at the hotel on Sunday August 11th . 1st prize of a flight, compliments of City Jet was won by John Bonham Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, 2nd Prize of a Hamper  was won by Ken Finn and 3rd prize, also a Hamper was won by argot O’Sullivan there were also a number of  spot prizes on the night. 
  • Heritage week commences on Bere Island on 24th August.

Events are as follows:

 1.      On Sunday 24th August there will be  a guided boat trip around Bere Island

( weather permitting ) .Historian  Ted  O’ Sullivan will give a talk during the trip on landmarks and shipwrecks. The trip will leave from Oilean na gCaorach at 2.00 pm. Places are strictly limited and tickets must be purchased in advance at the Bere Island Projects Group Office. If the weather is unsuitable Ted will give a talk at an indoor venue.

 

2.      On Tuesday 26th August  there will be a ‘ fun’  bus trip to military sites around Bere Island for children in the 8 to 13 age group.  Meet at St. Michael’s school at  11.00 am.

 

3.      On Thursday 28th August Clare Heardman, Glengarriff Park Ranger, will give a talk on flora and fauna on a walk from Rerrin village to Cloughland Martello tower. Meet in the village at 1.30. This event is not suitable for young children.

 

4.      On Saturday 30th August  Dr. Susan Steele will conduct a  walk taking in the marine life on the shore. This will be followed by an Art workshop with Dawn Ely. Meet at the Community Centre at 10.00 am. Young children must be accompanied by parents during the shoreline walk.

  • There is a possibility of vacancies arising on the Rural Social Scheme.  If there is anyone from the island interested in the scheme please contact us, and as usual the first eligible applicants will be accepted.
  • There is a sports summer camp running this week on Bere Island from 11 am until 2 pm each day. Anyone interested please call to the school during this, for details.
  • Congratulations to Janna O’Sullivan who is 21 today August 12th

  • On Wednesday 6th August there will be a Table Quiz at the Hotel at 9-30p.m. to raise funds for The Bere Island Festival.  The festival committee would really appreciate your support.

Ø      On Sunday will be

§        the Annual Graveyard Mass and later in the afternoon

§        A 5- a-side soccer tournament with lots of novelty events.

Ø      Sunday night is a Raffle in aid of the RNLI and Music in the Hotel by Martin Hurley.

·       Water Safety began yesterday, 21st July and will continue until– Saturday 26th July. Everyone is welcome to take part.

·       Many thanks to all who contributed to the church gate collection for MS last Sunday morning.  Your generosity is much appreciated.  €443 in total was collected.

County Sound Report 14th  July 2008 - Bere Island  

·        Bere Island Regatta will be taking place on the 8th 9th and 10th of August.  If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or would like to help out on the day, please contact the office.

·        There will be music in the Hotel on Saturday July19th with DJ George. Everyone is welcome.

·        Water Safety Week will take place from Monday 21st– Saturday 26th July. Everyone is welcome to take part.

·        Places are now full for Bere Island Community Childcare Group sports summer camp

·        There will be a church gate collection for MS next Sunday morning.  Your support would be appreciated.

 

County Sound Report 7th July 2008 - Bere Island  

·        Tai Chi classes will begin in St. Michael’s National School on Wednesday 9th of July and will take place weekly between 12 noon and 1.30 p.m.  Anyone interested in attending please contact the Bere Island Projects Group Office

·        Bere Island Regatta will be taking place on the 8th 9th and 10th of August.  If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or would like to help out on the day, please contact the office.

·        There will be music in the Hotel on Saturday 12th July with Jerry Bruton and also on the 19th with DJ George. Everyone is welcome.

·        Bere Island Community Childcare Group will be holding a sports summer camp at St. Michael’s National School from July 14th to 18th from  11 am to 2.p.m.  Activities will include golf,  Tai Chi, rugby, soccer.  Places are limited so please register at the community centre as soon as possible.  Payment of 45 euro is required in advance to secure booking.

·        Water Safety Week will take place from Monday 21st– Saturday 26th July. Everyone is welcome to take part.

County Sound Report 1st July 2008 - Bere Island  

·        The results of the AIB Better Ireland Awards have been counted. Congratulations to Urhan Community who were the winners of €10,000 in Beara. The results of the text voting proceeds for Bere Island are not yet known and will be announced shortly. 

·        There will be music in the Hotel on Saturday 12th July with Jerry Bruton. Everyone is welcome.

·        Congratulations to Cllr Noel Harrington, Castletownbere who officially became Lord Mayor of County Cork on Friday last at a ceremony in County Hall. We wish Noel and his wife Catherine and family all the best for the coming year.

·        This week we welcome Moira Murphy, Castletownbere to the Bere Island Projects Group Office. Moira will be taking up the position of Project Administrator until the end of the year and we wish her well.

·        Water Safety Week will take place from Monday 21st– Saturday 26th July. Everyone is welcome to take part.

·        To mark the retirement of Principal Kathleen Twomey mass will be held at St. Michael’s National School on Friday next 20th June at 11am followed by refreshments. Everyone is welcome to come along. Kathleen has been teaching on Bere Island for the past 36 years, all of her working life as a teacher and will be missed by many. We wish her all the very best for a happy and healthy retirement.

County Sound Report 10th of June 2008 - Bere Island  

·        Thank you to everyone who voted for Bere Island in the AIB Better Ireland Awards. A decision will be made later in the month.   

·        An awards ceremony was held at St Michael’s National School yesterday for the children’s participation in the Tidy Islands Colouring Competition. The winners were Ciara Carroll and Billy Murphy who both received an art kit. All posters will be displayed in businesses locally over the coming weeks.

·        The adjudicators for the Tidy Islands Competition will be visiting the island over the next few weeks. Everyone is asked to do their bit to keep the island tidy.

County Sound Report 20th of May 2008 - Bere Island  

·        The first Bere Island Country & Western Weekend took place last Friday and Saturday 23rd & 24th May. A large crowd attended both nights and a great weekend was had by all. Many thanks to all who supported the events and we hope you will come back next year for the second one. Many thanks to Brendan Finch for dance lessons, all the musicians and to Felix O’ Donoghue and his staff. Keep May the 23rd free next year for Robert Mizzell who will be playing in the Marquee.

·        There will be music by Willie Burke in the Hotel on Sunday 1st June. Everyone is welcome.

·        The exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be on every Tuesday between 4 and 8 pm at St. Michaels Church. All are welcome

·        The Eucharistic procession will take place next Sunday at 11am at St. Michaels Church.

·        A big thank you to everyone who supported the fundraising Golf Classic held on Friday & Saturday last in Bantry Golf Club. The event was a huge success and proceeds will go towards the development of the GAA facilities and the Heritage Centre.  

·        The Country & Western Weekend is drawing close. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased on the Island from The hotel, Murphy’s shop, Cattapilla café and the Lookout. In Castletownbere you can buy them from O’ Donoghue’s Bar, McCarthy’s Bar, Twomey’s Bar, The Copper Kettle. For more information on the line up of events contact 027 75099.  

·        The refuse collection will be held weekly on Wednesday at the usual time. Stickers can be purchased at Murphy’s Shop and the Projects Group Office.

County Sound Report 6th of May 2008 - Bere Island  

·        Last weekend Bere Island was the venue for the All Ireland orienteering championships. A large group of competitors arrived on the Island on Saturday morning for the 3 day event and left yesterday exhausted but delighted by the experiences they had over the weekend. We would like to thank the Cork Orienteering club, who hosted the championships for a well organised event.

  • Comhdhail Oileain na hEireann will hold their AGM this weekend Friday 25th & Saturday 26th April in Sherkin Island. Everyone is welcome.   

·        The closing date for applications for the Rural Social Scheme is this Friday 25th April. If you are interested in working in this scheme or would like more information please contact Bernie/ John on 75099 as soon as possible.  

·        The transition year students of Beara Community School are holding a fashion show this Thursday 24th April at 8pm in the school. Tickets are EURO 10 and are available in the school and the following participating shops: Wiseman’s, Murnane’s Bantry, Izzie’s, Essentials Boutique and Fiona’s Skibbereen. All proceeds will go towards the lifeboat and raising money for a defibrillator for the school.

·        Bere Island will host the first ever Country and Western weekend on Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th May. Friday night will kick off with the Nealie O’ Connor ceili Band and Tony Stevens will play on Saturday night. Dance workshops and children’s events will also be held.   • Bere Island Projects Group Ltd wishes to recruit a temporary Project Administrator to cover 26 weeks maternity leave. 1 full time/ 2 part time positions 35 hours per week. BIPG is a voluntary group funded under the Community Development Programme of the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs. We work to develop the social, economic and cultural framework of Bere Island, Co. Cork . The Administrator will work with the Project Co-ordinator and on behalf of the group’s elected committee on a wide range of projects. The successful candidate will be expected to have: Good inter personal skills, Ability to work on own initiative, Experience of book keeping and financial reporting, Good Computer skills, Experience in a community development setting, A good knowledge of the current funding environment.   • Bingo continues weekly at the Look Out on Saturday evenings at 8:30pm. Everyone is welcome. The Rural Transport bus will leave Oileain na gCaorach at 7:30pm and will travel the usual route for anyone wishing to avail of it.

County Sound Report 4th March 2008 - Bere Island  

  • Bere Island is this week in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Colum Harrington who died accidentally on Friday night last along with his two friends Shane Kelly and Finton O’ Driscoll. Colum was the second eldest son of Colum and Ann Harrington and only recently celebrated his 21st birthday. He was a fun loving young man who loved and enjoyed life and was well liked by everyone who knew him, which was evident over the past few days at his rosary, removal and burial. Sincere sympathy is extended to his parents Colum and Ann, his brothers Sean and Glen, sister Fiona, grandmother Helen, nephew Dylan, Zoe, aunts, uncles, relatives and huge circle of friends both on and off the island. May Colum, Shane and Finton all rest in peace.

County Sound Report 26th February 2008 - Bere Island  

  • Bingo will be held again in the Lookout, on Saturday at the usual time of 8:30pm. The Rural Transport bus will also run to facilitate the bingo.
  • The rural transport bus will be heading to Kenmare on Friday the 29th of February on the 6pm ferry, anyone interested can contact the office.

  • Happy birthday to the following who all celebrated their birthdays within the past week: Luke Sidley, Mia Fell de Olivera, Amy Orpen and Sheila Walsh.

County Sound Report 12th February 2008 - Bere Island  

  • Well done to The Bere Island Theatre Troupe who performed “Power of Darkness” by John McGahern on Saturday last in the Lecture Theatre, Rerrin, Bere Island . The 2 performances were well attended and all concerned with the performances should be congratulated for a very entertaining night.
  • Bingo will be held again in the Lookout, on Saturday at the usual time of 8:30pm. The Rural Transport bus will also run to facilitate the bingo.

  • Billy Clifford will hold a horticultural class at the community centre next Saturday the 23rd of February at 9.30 am. Everyone is welcome.

  • The rural transport bus will be heading to Kenmare on Friday the 29th of February on the 6pm ferry, anyone interested can contact the office.

County Sound Report 5th February 2008 - Bere Island  

  • Thank you to those who attended the public meeting on Thursday last. A list of Infrastructural works was compiled and will be forwarded to Cork County Council and the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs.

  • The Bere Island Theatre Troupe will perform “Power of Darkness” by John McGahern on Saturday 16th February in the Lecture Theatre, Rerrin, Bere Island . The matinee performance is at 2pm and the evening show at 8pm. Tickets are €10 adult and concessions €7. For further details please contact 027 75099. Please note this play is not recommended for children.

  • Dr. Jacqui Glisson, North Road Surgery, Castletownbere will hold her monthly clinic at the Health Centre, Bere Island today from 11am – 12pm. Patients will be seen on a turn up and wait basis.

County Sound Report 29th January 2008 - Bere Island  

  • Minister Éamon O’ Cuív visited Bere Island on Friday last 25th January. He was accompanied by Cllr Danny Crowley, Cllr Christy O’ Sullivan & Olibhear O’ hArliathe, Department, Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs and visited Lonehort Fort, the Old School, the Lecture Hall, the recycling centre, the football pitch and St. Michael’s National School where a public meeting was held. We were delighted to hear the announcement of 134,000 euro for the Old School Project and look forward to his next visit.

  • An Active Retirement Group Social will be held in Cametringnane Hotel, Castletownbere on tomorrow Wednesday 30th January from 11am – 4pm. If you have not booked your place please do so today by contacting 75099.

  • A public meeting will be held this Thursday 31st January at 8pm in the community centre to compile a list of Infrastructural works which will be submitted to Cork County Council and the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs. Everyone is welcome to attend.

  • Cllr Danny Crowley will hold a clinic at the community centre, Bere Island from 4:30pm – 6pm on Friday next 1st February. Anyone wishing to meet Danny should come on a turn up and wait basis. The Annual General Meeting of the Bere Island Fianna Fail Cumann will also be held on Friday 1st February at 6:30pm in the community centre. Everyone is welcome.

  • Birthday greetings to Kieran Sullivan, The Strand, Jimmy Walsh, Derrycreeveen and Adam Walsh, Ballinakilla who celebrate their birthdays around now.

County Sound Report 22nd January 2008 - Bere Island  

  • The next Bere Island Active Retirement Group social will be held in the Look Out on tomorrow Wednesday 23rd January at 12 noon. Bridin Ashe, HSE will attend and prepare a plan of activities for the coming year followed by lunch. Everyone is welcome.

  • An Active Retirement Group Social will be held in Cametringnane Hotel, Castletownbere on Wednesday 30th January from 11am – 4pm. Tea/ Coffee will be served on arrival followed by activities, lunch and music to John White. Tickets cost €14 and must be pre booked by contacting the Projects Group Office on 75099 no later than today Tuesday 22nd January. Please note places are limited.

  • A big thank you to everyone who supported the recent Church Gate Collection in aid of the Chernobyl Children’s Project. A total of 240 euro was raised for this worthy cause.
  • Best of luck to Deirdre Archbold who is through to the live show of You’re a Star on Sunday next 27th January at the Helix, Dublin . Deirdre has Bere Island roots as her mother Vera Brophy is from the island. We wish her every success.
  • The Rural Transport Bus will go to Bantry this Friday 25th January to the cinema. Anyone interested in travelling should contact the Projects Group Office on 75099 to book a place.

  • Majella Ni Chriochain, Manager of Comhdhail Oileain na hEireann will visit Bere Island today Tuesday 15th January and will be at the community centre from 10am – 12 noon. Majella will speak to anyone interested in the policies of Comhdhail which were launched recently in Dublin . To arrange an appointment contact BIPG office on 75099.
