Bere Island Festival 2010

The annual Bere Island festival took place on August 3rd to 8th and was a great success. The usual line up of events took place plus a few new ones, which included a cookery demo on Tuesday with Gemma in the lookout, where she gave plenty tips and ideas on how to prepare and cook seafood, all the participants were delighted when they all sampled the cooked fish, which was delicious. After the seafood demo we then had the children’s talent show and disco, which was held in the hotel and  was well attended and supported and showed a wide range of talent among the young entertainers. Tuesday night was the festival bingo which attracted a large attendance.

On Wednesday there was a treasure hunt which was organised by the heritage centre staff, this was also a new event and it proved very popular and should become a regular event. On Wednesday night the annual festival quiz was held in the hotel and again the crowds came out to support it. Thursday was a day off to give everyone a chance to rest up for the weekend.

Friday afternoon the children’s sports was held in the new GAA pitch and a special presentation was made to Leon and Eileen Pollinger for organising the sports for the last 34 years, this was  followed by the annual Bere Island biathlon which started at Oileáin Na gCaorach and finished at Rerrin. The children’s biathlon also started at the community centre and finished at Rerrin as well. The biathlon had record numbers of participants again this year and is a very popular event which grows from year to year.

Saturday consisted of various water sports including raft race, swimming, canoeing, greasy pole and pillow fights. MC for the day was Teddy Black who did a great job at keeping the crowd entertained and keeping the various events running smoothly.  Music at the prize giving was by DJ Jo Zee, who kept the crowd dancing in the street. Thanks to the crew of the lifeboat for visiting the festival for the day and giving people a chance to view the boat.

Every day finished with a musical event, Friday night was music with DJ JO ZEE, Saturday night was “No Frontiers” and Sunday night finished with Sunday cure. The RNLI raffle took place on Saturday night and the winners were, Maureen Lyons, Dublin , Pat Lehane, Mossie Sullivan and Peter Harrington Cork, Sheila O’ Driscoll, Maureen Hanley and Carmel Sheehan of Castletownbere and Helen Riddell, Bere Island . Congratulations to all. Thanks to all who donated prizes and supported ticket sales, a total of € 480 was raised for the lifeboat.

The committee would like to thank all the sponsors who contribute to the festival every year and to all the volunteers who gave of their time throughout the weekend. They are also looking for volunteers to help plan for the festival for 2011, if you are interested please contact the office on 027 75099.
